Lessons

Private lessons are the best possible way to learn to play a musical instrument: the student has the teacher's undivided attention and receives a program of instruction tailored to his or her specific needs, allowing him or her to progress much more quickly and easily.

Lessons are available through Kellert Music Studios on a variety of instruments including flute, clarinet, saxophone, and piano, and are scheduled once a week for one half hour to an hour at our studio near downtown Silver Spring.

When Should My Child Begin Music Lessons?

Young Children
Children begin responding to and learning through music from their first moments of life, and music can play a vital role in their mental and physical development. Early childhood music classes can play a very important role in preparing your child for lessons, and there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to what age is appropriate to begin formal instrumental lessons. The main requirements are that your child should be able to sit still and focus for 10-15 minutes at a stretch, should know the alphabet (or at least A through G) and be able to count to 10. You should also carefully consider the fact that the younger your child is the more involved you will need to be with his or her practicing and lessons. The piano is an ideal instrument to for very young children begin musical study with, serving as an excellent basis for later instrumental experimentation or a wonderful choice for a lifetime of enjoying music.

Elementary School
Many students start out at this age level and find great enjoyment and creativity in taking lessons. While every age group experiences this, grade school children have enhanced enthusiasm and can learn early good musical habits before bad ones set in. This age is one at which students soak up musical information (and all information for that matter) like a sponge, making this a great time to start studying music.

Middle School
This is a great time for students to have an emotional outlet through music. Playing the classics and popular music allows students in junior high to express themselves and show individuality. A greater attention span also gives students at this level an advantage over younger children in terms of focus and concentration during lessons and practice.

High School
High school students enjoy lessons for the same reasons as middle school students, but have a greater sense of responsibility at this point. Many middle school musicians begin to find great success in the powerful combination of having both the concentration of an adult and the drive of younger students.

How Old Is Too Old To Begin Lessons?

Picking up music lessons as an adult is becoming more and more popular, whether the activity serves as an extension of a childhood experience or as an exploration of new interests. Adults enjoy lessons for a wide variety of reasons, whether as a means of stress relief or simply for the enjoyment of learning a valuable hobby and secondary skill, and are uniquely qualified to learn through one-on-one music lessons, bringing all of the skills and discipline of their experience to the table to create a powerful basis for musical success.
